With this in mind, it is perhaps beneficial to offer the following common terms used in Print and Design.
Aqueous Coating - A water based coating applied after printing, either while the paper is still on press or after it’s off press, giving a gloss, dull or matte finish to the piece. Also helps the underlying ink from rubbing off.
Bleed - Where the image extends to the edge of printed sheet, without leaving a border
CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, the ink colours used for process colour reproduction
Coated Paper - Paper with a surface coating to produce a smooth finish either matt or glossy
GSM - Grams per square meter: a standard measure of the weight of paper. Also expressed as gm2
Die-Cutting - The process of using sharp steel rules to cut special shapes in the paper being used in the production of a project.
Digital Colour Proof - An electronic colour proof reproduced from the electronic data.
DPI - An acronym for Dot Per Inch. The number of dots that fit horizontally and vertically into a one-inch measure. Generally the more dots per inch, the more details is captured and the sharper the image will print.
EPS (Encapsulated Postscript) - A file format that allows Postscript data to be stored and edited, is easy to transfer between Mac and MS-DOS platforms.
Four Colour Process - A method that uses of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black to simulated the continuous tones and variety of colours in a colour image. See CMYK.
Grammage - Weight of a standard area of paper expressed in grams per square meter, abbreviated gsm or gm2.
